    Hunger strikes cause pain that can be relieved by drinking salty water, so prison authorities will sometimes deny salt.
    Sometimes prisoners opt for liquid supplements (like those given to malnourished) therefore technically still not eating (this is still a very difficult task for the striker). This allows hunger strikes to go on for a much longer time than.
