First, show your portfolio around emphisizing your diversity and ability to interpret a clients vision.
Don't be afraid to take a 'production' job at a print shop. This will build up your chops with different file formats, programs you are unfamiliar with. A job like this also gives you an intimate look at how experienced designers set up their files and work. It also helps build a repore with agencies in your area.
You're on your way! If you don't get the job you want, take the job you can get and go from there. Just know what you want and the rest will follow.
