In 2016, 42 men and 166 women under the age of 18 were married in the state of Tennesse. The Nonprofit group Unchained at Last says it has found at least three marriages in Tennessee involving a child as young as 10 years old, but state officials have disputed that claim.
At this point, you're probably wondering. "huh, why would someone kill this bill?". It must be complicated, no? well, if Tennessee were to ban child marriages by modifying their state marriage law; then lawmakers would have to acknowledge the existence of same-sex marriage, and as we ALL know; consensual homosexual relationships Trumps pedophilia and child exploitation.
Well, this only happens in Tennessee right?!
Wrong again! More than 200,000 children were married in the United States over the last 15 years. Girls as young as 10 were among the minors who wedded under legal loopholes, a 14-year-old girl married a 74-year-old man in Alabama, a 17-year-old wed a 65-year-old groom in Idaho. Children as young as 12 are granted marriage licenses in Alaska, Louisiana, and South Carolina, and 11 other states allowed 13-year-olds to wed. That's odd so far all Republican-leaning states.
Just last year, Chris Christie, the then governor of New Jersey and a full-time douchebag refused to ban child marriage because 'it would conflict with religious customs' and 'An exclusion without exceptions would violate the cultures and traditions of some communities' The bill vetoed by Mr Christie had already been approved by both houses of the legislature and would have made New Jersey the first state to outlaw child marriage.
