Anyone aware of any good essays, academics etc. who predicted the trend of fake news early on in the digital/web days?
I would be interested to read.
I realise other 'old' media commentators have covered similar issues to death but anyone know of any more recent stuff? It kind of seems like a bolt out of the blue to a degree. And probably the most dangerous by product of the net so far. Nothing is believable anymore, reading various sources is also not a solution. Fact checking sites have their own agenda(s).
I know all media/news has been biased forever and there to serve its masters but today the ability to disseminate fake news / alternative facts is frankly quite terrifying.
Would love to read some articles that predicted this way before it actually happened. I know there is a lot of recent stuff.
Thanks.
- It's fascinating because Trump is the pinnacle of it to the point of surreal blatant nonsense, he is the result of what came before.fadein11
- Yes I am aware of spin forever - but there is spin and just made up shit lol - yet he seems to be getting away with it daily.fadein11

- Don't let my recommendation discredit this book. He's not a fan of Trump and it's pretty eye opening on the extent of click bait.IRNlun6
- I worked in lead-generation for a few years and it's really hard to visualize the scale until you see the numbers. We really shouldn't trust anything.IRNlun6
- thanks both of you. I am looking at sources from the early days of the web - whether anyone saw this coming. I know old media had it's issues but that isfadein11
- incomparable to how things work today. It's for a project I am working on, basically a digital art installation. I will continue looking. Thanks.fadein11
