I was born in / spent part of my formative years in Alaska. My dad hunted moose for food, lived in a cabin with no running water, had a substantial collection of firearms. I was raised around guns of all types, from air pistols to assault rifles. They can be neat and fun as long as one is responsible with them. They can also be quite a utility when necessary.
However, even with all of my history with guns and the culture, I can't for the life of me understand why so many are overly concerned with something like a ban on assault weapons.
The second amendment was written in a time not only when guns were less powerful, but states were too. The only logic I can think of is there's a swath of people in America who are thinking to themselves, "If I ever don't get my way, I'll take it out on them with a gun." (I'd bet substantial amounts that plenty of mass shootings occur because of a train of thought similar to this.)
We have moved into an age of information where persistence is the only way to push an ideology - a single mass shooting may have dominated the news even just 20 years ago (I remember watching Columbine on CNN), but now that Americans are normalized to them, guns pose less of an actual threat to the state than they do to just fellow people.
(This also is an aspect of the glaring irony that is most Americans, in that they support the state so long as those who administer it are on "their side" - it's less a model of governance and more a model of children and parents.)
- Why do you think other, previous, more popular administrations, didn't do anything about it when they had the opportunity???robotron3k
- ^ Opportunity fucking LOLRamanisky2
- because irrational gun lovers think god gave them the right to own devices of mass killing, and they have powerful lobbyists behind them to kill political careemonospaced

- Perhaps Obama's tears kept the swamp swampy through 14+ mass shootings during his reign...robotron3k
