Most of the time I just say that I am a designer even when that is extremely vague.
Found this to be useful when I have no intentions of talking about me or what I do. If I say that I am a Graphic Designer, I will inevitably get the usual come back that I find annoying... "so you do business cards and flyers... cool"
If I talk to someone from the industry or someone that might know what graphic designers do... I do then say anything like designer, senior graphic designer.
