    I just installed Sierra, prior to formatting my computer and quicktime is being a lil' bitch and decided it won't let me preview my .Mov files anymore. It's making me want to open them and re-encode them just play them and...

    Is there a codec I'm missing in order to continue previewing movs?

    • Old "legacy" codecs such as Apple Animation require conversion. At least it's automatic.evilpeacock
    • However, if you've got some funky non-standard Divx or other codecs wrapped in a .mov it may not work with QT current.evilpeacock
    • In those cases the files may play with something like VLC or MPlayer, but good luck trying to do any editing or conversion.evilpeacock
    • Basically, using proprietary codecs is a dead end. Always keep "masters" of important files, and transcode to modern lossless codecs when available.evilpeacock
