Does that happen with every font or just the font you want to use? What are you using to manage your fonts?
I probably don't have any fixes for you but if it's driving you crazy and you just want to continue working on the doc and get whatever you need done, upload it to google docs and edit it on there. you can save it back out as a doc when you're finished.
- good work around. it seems like it's these two new font families that I installed... maybe i'll try a different install source.
