California's population makes up almost 20% of the entire US.

Yet their 55 electoral votes out of the total 538 is only 10%.

Their 55 votes needs to be more like 100. The EC was put in place during a time when CA didnt have such a large population gap over all of the other states, and it has never been updated since.

The same is true for NY. The population has grown much faster than most other states, yet their EC vote total has never been updated to reflect this. So it gets easy to understand why a state like CA feels like their votes dont matter as much as they should, because they actually dont.

The EC system is fine, its just out of date. Trump said this himself in 2012 when he tweeted out that it was a "disaster for democracy". Because RIGHT NOW it is. But he said that before he knew it would become the only reason he would win. There is a BIG problem in this country when trump only gets 20% of the population to vote for him, yet still wins. This is not right no matter how you spin it. So good for Cali trying to break off. It likely wont happen, but this will unsettle both sides of the isle in Washington if it gets enough attention, and it looks like it is.

    • It's a funny old thing, though. A few years ago, this would be totally fringe. But with social media, it has the potential to be a big enough thing to rattle ..Continuity
