Replacing my iPhone 6 Plus with a Google Pixel XL. Pretty upset with my last two iPhones and how long they lasted.

The 6 Plus had the screen ghosting issue where the touchscreen randomly wouldn't work. You had to kind of twist the phone and/or push on the screen to get it to work again. Apple admitted it was an issue (loose connection) but wanted $150 to fix it.

It also had that annoying battery issue (software related?) that anytime my battery was under ~30% it would just randomly power down and claim to be out of battery. Plug it back in and it turns on instantly with 30-40% battery.

Just the other day it stopped picking up cell service. The SIM card works in my router still and picks up LTE. This was the real nail in the coffin. The other issues were just super annoying. Which is ridiculous to deal with on a $700 phone now that I'm typing it out.

I was going to get an iPhone 7 Plus. However, my wife just got one and it's super buggy. The biggest issue is that sometimes it doesn't ring or vibrate when receiving a call — even though both are turned on. Yes, her new $800 phone doesn't even ring sometimes. She's a nurse and takes call so her phone is pretty much useless to her until they get this fix.

So I'm saying "fuck it" and trying out the Pixel because I feel like a fool to give apple another $800 for a phone that has so many stupid issues.

You might not think that is too crazy, but I'm an iOS developer and have only developed for iOS for the last six or seven years. Suddenly I'll be without an iPhone — so that feels weird. My current job is an iPad app, so that makes it a little easier.

I love my Macbook Pro and the OS, but I feel that things are really starting to go downhill — especially on mobile (software) side of things. I see Apple job postings for pretty high-level positions on StackOverflow a lot now.

Long story short — I'm giving the iPhone and Swift and rest and am going to try out Andoid and Go Lang.

    • I hope that your $800 Pixel doesn't have any problems at all.monospaced
    • I'm sure it will. Hopefully the screen, battery, and cell service will at least work though. lolrosem
    • I've been fucked on 30% battery issue more than once.hotroddy
    • They'll refund that $150 or fix it for free: https://www.apple.co…evilpeacock
    • Pixel is great - give it a whirl. Just got one. Got the XL. Battery life, camera and screen is amazing. Plus best version of Android I have used with no shitfadein11
    • manufacturer bloatware. I think you will like once you get used to the different os (which is far better than ios by the way).fadein11

    • or just learn QT and you can develop for both!mugwart
    • hey @rosem, I'm thinking of making the switch from iPhone to something else too (after using ALL iPhones since the first generation)Krassy
    • ...why did you pick Pixel XL over all other competitors?Krassy
    • My wife and I had both of the first two issues with our iPhone 6s' at nearly the same time. I hear the Pixel is amazing.kona
    • You won't be disappointed.set
    • @evilpeacock — they will refund you whatever you paid previously, minus the $150 they are charging.rosem
    • From the URL: "Apple will repair your device for a service price of $149."rosem
    • @Krassy — It's Google's closest competitor to the iPhone. Same price range. Similar quality build and as @fadein11 mentioned no software bloat bullshit.rosem
    • I still think Sony is the best phone on the market, but the pixel isn't a bad choice by any stretch... And is miles ahead of the iPhone.set
    • I hope stores start showing up with a real selection - Sony, Xaomi, etc., all in one place. I hate that it's all carrier-only phones.formed
    • Don't understand why people spend so much on phones. $200 will do everything you need, aside from great photos.section_014
