It depends on your personality. You have to be very clear on your strengths and weaknesses. Are you a good business person? If not, you'd better hire someone to help or you're sunk.
I just started freelancing in December and I love it but still getting used to that low level hum of anxiety that says, ok, I'm covered through the end of next month...then what? Losing the security of a paycheck is challenging (whether its a good challenge or just stressful is very dependent upon your way).
