Tried kayaking today, for the first time ever, with a couple of friends from work who are members of a local club. Went splishy-splashing around Kungsholmen. Took a bit of time to get used using my feet to steer in combination with the paddle but it all clicked once I got out into the open water

    It was fucking magic.

    • wait, what? you steer with your feet in kayak?scarabin
    • your feet control the rudder.wagshaft
    • never knew that!scarabin
    • (note: not all kayaks have rudders)Gnash
    • yeah, the thinner, speedier, ones have pedals. I was in a beginners which is wider for better stability and has a stick for L / R.face_melter
    • no they should not have rudders at all :D
get rid of that and learn how to control it with the water rowers.!%

    • I see kayaks every day, I never seen one with a rudder, for lakes I'm guessing?moldero
    • kayaking is pretty fucking dope, cruising up and down the coast exploring and spearing fish is magical as fuckmoldero
    • Where the club is situated and the route(s) you take can be busy with other water traffic, so being able to change direction is literally a lifesaver.face_melter
    • rudders are usually an add-on -- they can cost up to $400 to add. usually only on the bigger, touring boatsGnash
    • when they're loaded with gear for camping they can be more of a challenge to navigate.Gnash
    • Why do I live in London again?detritus
