    Snapshot from Sunderland

Anger at the EU runs high in this long-time Labour-leaning city, as its traditional businesses such as fishing and shipping have been decimated by competition overseas. Residents say the U.K. should stop sending cash to the E.U. and spend it on domestic services such as schools and health care.

Andrew Parker, a 36-year-old local taxi driver, said he thinks he U.K. should pull out of the EU. The money the U.K. provides to the union would be better spent on the national health system, he said.

"They should be spending more on our own country than giving it to other countries," he said.

But others here worried that if the U.K. left, the ripple effects could harm the city's biggest employer, Nissan Motor, which employs about 7,000 people at a giant manufacturing plant. Rachel Meadows, proprietor of Katie's Garden, a craft and tea room in downtown Sunderland, said friends who work at the Nissan car factory were worried that a leave vote could harm their jobs.
