Export to PDF, keep all the colors. Select the colors and isolate to layers.
That's the best way I've found to work with them. Exporting to PDF usually maintains the curves, too, whereas opening the dwg in Illustrator sometimes shows the curves as reduced lines, etc.
DWG Viewers, free Autodesk tool, exports to PDF if you need a tool to do that for you.
