Alright, I ordered a Nexus 5X on Google Fi. If anyone cares I'll let you know how well it works.
I already use less than 1GB/month (and that's without using public wifi, ever) so I presume I'll use much less if this auto-wifi-hopping works as well Google says it does.
Plus, I travel outside the states frequently, and right now the 5X is super cheap (if you sign up for Fi and buy through Google). And there's no contract, so if I'm not happy after a month or two I'll just sell the Nexus and go back to T-Mobile/iPhone.
