    My theory:

    Neither Steven Avery nor the Manitwoc PD killed Halbach. The brother, Scott Tadych, and possibly his son in law Bobby Dassey as an accomplice, murdered Halbach.

    Immediately after the lawsuit and depositions the police were convinced it was Avery but saw the evidence against him was scant and needed a smoking gun to put him away for good this time. They fabricated evidence with the key, car DNA and maybe even relocation of the bones, if that wasn't Tadych's doing, to make the case open and shut.
