If you think LR is slow you probably have a slow computer. My MBP has 16GB of memory and a pretty fast SSD, with photos stored on an external firewire drive. All my RAW images are 30-35MB. It's somewhat slow depending on what tasks I'm doing but it's not annoying by any means.
