I don't think it's any worse than before. However with the new site any post that gets a lot of comments shows up the front page. and political debates and arguments inevitably generate a lot of comments.
So going to the homepage is looks like people are obsessed with gun control when in reality the majority of the posts are still pictures of dogs balancing clocks on their heads and stuff like that.
