Nobody is holly in a war.
There are 3 general fractions in Syria: gov't (Assad), rebels, and ISIS. Each fights with the other but in reality gov't hates the rebels (for obvious reasons) but doesn't mind ISIS (at the moment) because through their atrocities they drive the general population in hands of stability (gov't). ISIS for Syrians is like Al-Qaeda used to be for Americans - a mythical force of evil that we should seek protection from.

The Russians want to prop up the gov't so they will hit the rebels first as it's defacto gov'ts main enemy. Then, when the rebels are defeated, they will go after ISIS. The west is pissed because by hitting the rebels, the Russians are proping up the gov't (and Assad) and this is not what the west wants here. Ideally they would see ISIS destroyed and the rebels win.
