    Standard tools with give you standard results. If you want scatterplots, bar graphs, etc. then D3.js (for web) or Tableau can handle large data sets.

    If you want to test standard representations on a small scale, there's always Keynote.

    For anything more bespoke, and more compelling as a visualization, you have to go Processing IMHO.

    We're working on a dataviz project right now, and the Processing devs (http://diskcact.us/) have built in a simple UI for all the color and layout variables we need to adjust. It's sweet!
