Leave the city and find a nice, peaceful place to stay. I personally love Candlewood Lake, but there are plenty of places on the water.
Taking a 4.5 year old around NY would a huge pain, imho. Just finding a bathroom, etc., is a challenge. It's just dirty, smelly and far from "safe".
Can you pay for cab rides everywhere? Otherwise taking the subway with a little kid would be a hassle (imho).
- far from safe? no it's not! NYC is incredibly safe compared to many large cities, and it's not dirty/smelly unless you're in some far-off slum outside the citymonospaced
