    Any recommendations for an Arduino ingenue like myself who wants to learn how to use the platform to 'make a machine'?

    I was helping a computard friend update the firmware that underpins his 3D printer last night, and it was less hair-raising than I'd imagined.

    His board was a Mega-something.

    I'm after a board/kit that I can learn, and then scale. If kit, then ideally something honed towards controlling stepper motors, etc.

    Any recommendations?

    Is the 'Getting started with Arduino' book mentioned earlier, published in 2011, still relevant, or is there something .. betterer and more contemporarier?
