Maybe learn from my example: (end of 90 to now, Hungary [CE] )
@ my 1st workplace at a larger ad agency the clients sit next to me because at that time even the accounts didn't know how websites worked, I created garbage learned nothing just how mediocre people do things (and some technical stuff like css and html). (and newstoday happened!)

2nd: small company with clients form e-lance, I had to face real competition. we had all the time in the world, created innovative things and learned a lot. made shitload of money by working my asses off and enjoyed every single second of it :) (this company is now ustream.tv)

3rd: In just 3 months I was CD and indispensable, won high-quality clients, pulled together a great team, did stuff never before (like exhibit and broadcast designs etc), financial meltdown kicked in, owners where stealing money from the project budgets, I left the company when a client called because the half of the invoices for the marketing budget went missing...(the money was in the ceo-s castle wedding and brand new car...)

4th: I was hired to create a creative division for a 50+ developer firm, almost all ad agency was our client, made the division profitable, quit because realized after 6 months that they hired me to win larger projects, and they secretly used my portfolio to get new work. (also my contract was a sht :)

5th: Freelance :) I got clients I want, I can produce things in the quality I want, for the price I want. But it has a side effect: i'm alone, I have to deal with all the things like communication to finances. And I really miss working in a team :)
