The safest place to sit on train

Some studies have found that cars toward in middle of the train are most likely to tumble off the track. Other research, meanwhile, shows that the very first vehicle (usually the lead locomotive) is most frequently the first car to derail.

The bottom line: Choose a car one or two back from the center of the train.

In fact, according to U.S. Department of Transportation data, “side collisions”—where the side of the train slams into another train, a bus or even the ground—are far more common than rear-end or head-on collisions, especially on train lines with heavy ridership. Since 2004, there have been 1,252 train incidents involving side collisions, compared with 206 rear-end collisions and 97 head-on collisions.

So forgo the views and settle into an aisle seat. And you might as well make it rear-facing, just for good measure.

To recap, the safest place to sit on a train is a rear-facing aisle seat toward the back of the train.

    • Same applies to The Tube if concerned about bombs. Bombs do more damage at the front of a train, or at least that is the 'hope'.detritus
    • ..also, don't go very last carriage, as there's always the chance of rear impacts.detritus
