PARC XEROX has been doing extensive study in this area as part of their XFR project. Can't recall what that stands for at the moment.
Anyway, at SIGGRAPH 2001, they had this arcade game stand-up console that scrolled through a text in the manner of flash cards, one word at a time. Since the machine's controls were based on a racing game platform, the accelerator sped the words up, and the steering wheel chose different texts to scroll through. After some practice, I was reading at 1400 words a minute.
