"Finding self" is about finding out if you do stuff because YOU really want to or because you were told you should want to do it.
It's vital as much of what constitutes "you" is a product of outside forces and thus "you" are not really you. We ALL do stuff because of forces outside of oneself - for the most part we accept certain level of dishonesty but when it comes to basic functions of life we need certainty. This is where "finding yourself" comes into play. Generally i find the more you know yourself the better you are at what you do because you end up facing reality as opposed to the fantasy of how things are.

On one hand it's not that difficult - all you have to do it pose a question "why am I dining it" in relations to basic actions (why watch THIS film, why laugh at THOSE jokes, why eat THIS food, why wear THOSE clothes). The difficult part is staying honest with the answers as your ego will come up with all sorts of fake reasons. The reason why ego is working so hard to protect your from yourself is because it doesn't want you to find out how shallow, banal, boring, unimaginative, stupid you really are. However if you are willing to swallow those labels early on then you will find tremendous room for improvement. After all if you know you are stupid in some field all you have to do is hit some books.
