This guy doesn't seem to get design at all...
"Not to throw Dieter Rams under the bus, but why is it long lasting? Why does it matter that we come up with something that will be a static thing that we need to stay with for years?"
Geez, let's reinvent the button just cuz data. If it works it works, no one's questioning the wheel anymore. He doesn't seem to understand that there are fundamental truths to human interactions that once discovered because enduring concepts.
He speaks like a junior (or just plain bad) UX designer. The bad ones always want to test everything to get at an answer and have no idea what the outcome will be while the good ones just get shit done... now this may seem counter-intuitive to the whole "data" concept but the fact is we all have to operate under a budget. And spending too much money on the details means you don't get the core done... and that takes intuition and experience (read talent). In a purely academic setting, please go ahead and turn every stone, but this is a business we're trying to run here and your paycheck doesn't grow on a tree.
