Based on my experience, the effects are real but they also vary a lot from person to person. Some people experience a strong effect while for others it's almost nothing. Modafinil is apparently popular in Silicon Valley because it gives you intense focus and lets you stay up for a long time. Piracetam is more subtle but has a similar effect in terms of focus and energy.
