a guy contacted me wanting to use some of my art for the cover of his album, or maybe for a particular song of his.

how do i charge for/handle this?

would he then own that art? what if he wanted to make t-shirts, posters or other merch with it?

i've always avoided these kinds of things simply because i don't know how to handle them properly, but i could use some extra cash at the moment

    • is he big? or just some local artist?benfal99
    • You can write a simple contrat stipulating terms like 'only for the cover, can't re-use to sell other stuff...' kinda thingbenfal99
    • not huge but big enough to perform at consciousness festivals a lot. about 3,000 likes on FBscarabin
    • i don't mind them using it on merch and stuff if it means i can charge more, i just don't know how to price that outscarabin
    • i'm guessing i wouldn't be able to sell my own prints of that work after the deal?scarabin
    • good question.. I guess they dont want to pay too much. Those artists dont have plenty of money.benfal99

    • i don't trust musicians to be organized enough to keep proper royalty records... a friend said $5k minimum for exclusive rights... what sounds good for cover and merch use? $1k? is that too low or high?scarabin
    • rights... what sounds good for cover and merch use? $1k? is that too low or too high? i don't want to sell myself short but i also don't want to scare what may be poor musicians offscarabin
