My default position is to hate Kanye, but then I never read what he says, or listen to his music. I'm just aware of him through the media, news etc. And from that he's annoying as hell.
But for some reason I decided to listen to the Zane Lowe interview above. And somehow I found myself warming to him. He's obviously not the sharpest tool in the box, I don't think he produces anything very interesting, it's all rehashing what has gone before....but he does obviously love what he does and you can tell he actually tries very hard, has a broad output and it lucky enough to try his hand at a lot of things. I don't think he's a good creator, but I do think he's probably quite a good curator of other people's talent.He seems to be a wannabe designer. When he talked about Le Corbusier's concrete lamp, and the democratisation of design through cheaper materials...that actually made sense and seemed to be an intelligent thought.
He also seems to understand the point of design, when he said:
"art is to be free, design is to fix things"I still don't like him, but for once I saw a glimmer of life there.
