If you want good quality sound it's generally going to cost good money, and if you want clarity, buy monitors, not speakers.
I have a simple but expensive setup but it sounds incredible, I have also gone and re-ripped my CDs for playing WAV files.
PC via Firewire > MOTU Traveler > Optical cable to DSpeaker room correction > Mackie HRS-120 Sub > PSI A215M.
The PSI's are the clearest monitors I have ever heard.
Headphones are great and all but you won't go the real feel of bass.
I use the KRK-8400 which you can get for $120.- < this sounds like sort of an audio nerd2002
