IMHO there is no real 'higher purpose' that society serves.
However, a problem shared is a problem halved. In general, I would suggest the purpose of society is to share the human experience and in the process, hopefully, the whole benefits for the sharing of human experience/knowledge etc which allows for a better life for the next generation.
P.S This leads off the idea, and self belief, that the sole purpose of our lives is to re-produce.
