I really like my FireTV, if you have or want amazon prime this is your go to. You can side load android apps (XBMC/Kodi, emulators, etc.) without the need for a jailbreak or root. It has a superior controller compared to Apple's, is a faster performing device and solid wifi speed & stability. I constantly stream media on my local network and have never had an issue (other Android options have had issues). I had an AppleTV2, jailbroken, sold it for a profit 3 years after purchase. Never had a Roku. If you want airplay there are a few apps for the FireTV that enable it... mixed results there.
