Problem with doing it manually is when you have so many over the years and you want an easy way to track them and get info (i.e. like on a piece of software), especially when end of year comes. An app is nice when you also want to send automated payment reminders to clients.

I'm in the same boat, been doing it manually with my own template, over the years. However, now I have thousands of invoices and it's an issue, because obviously I can't manually input that many into an app. It'd be nice to be able to track how years go, what my busiest months are, when a client paid an invoice and how many days late or early they were, and to be able to look up what I charged for a similar project -- without having to look through papers or PDF's. I keep a log of everything manually now, but again, there's so many that it's not efficient and a mistake can easily be made.

I've been looking into Billings Pro as well. I like how it's a separate app and has a decent amount of customization. You DO have to pay monthly payments to have it on the cloud (server space basically), but at only $99 per year, I think it's reasonable.
