    My Theory is:

    Muslims are proud people. During the 8th and 9th century it looked like islam was going to take over the world.

    The last 500 years the West has made great strides and have been encrouching on Islam (ie. culture, geo political influences, etc)

    In the last 20 years we've seen a surge of Islamic radicalism.

    It is my belief that the internet has been the fuel to this fire. Muslim men go online and can bear witness to secular values (ie. 90% of the world). They see out of control materialism.. Not to mention the 1000's of website of women getting DP like it's as routine as having breakfast. . All the meantime they have to keep their women in beekeeper suits. They don't feel good about it and they justify their actions since it is THEM doing GODS work ridding the world of such behavior.
