that happened because in the screen after updating to iOS8, there is a page concerning specifically what numbers and emails do you want active with iMessage. Since you seem like a very savvy guy, I'm sure you clicked next without reading anything, and then came rushing back here to create another Apple hate thread. Anyway, as other people already pointed out, this is easily fixed by toggling on and off iMessages. Sometimes it takes a while to validate your number in their servers, so just relax, it will eventually appear there and you can disable the email.
