I did mine on "Modes of Acculturation". The idea of sub culture becoming pop-culture through marketing and design. How the visual style can be determined by the demographic. Why it's important not to feed into this etc etc.
My advice for avoiding some of the possible pitfalls are.
1) Don't turn it into a manifesto.
2) Tie the themes into work you feel strongly about (good or bad) and are knowledgable about.
