I guess you're printing white over black or somthing. Well, you don't actually have to print the white over the top.
The printer misses out the white bits and shows the paper through. But if it's trying to print white over the top then you have to set up your knockout groups in InDesign or Quark.
Knockout tells the printer to not print any colour and show the paper.
That's probably the crappest explanation ever by the way.
