If you really want to get to know this person then you have to except that it will take time.
No brillant questions will replace this or shorten the period. Generally the more time you spend with someone in different situations eg. parties, with other friends, times of pressure etc. the better you will get to know them.
I used to ask all sorts of clever questions, but generally people take time to trust you enough that they feel they can be open with you and answer honestly.
As a guide beware of anyone who tells you everything the first time they meet you. They are trying to force intimacy.
Also try and meet this persons friends. The kind of friends they hang around with will tell you a lot more about them.
Any way that's my 2 cents hope you find it useful.
