the actaul registration for a domain name costs $6. (for the majors - .com, .net, etc), so anyhting above that is strictly markup. Hence the ability for godaddy, etc to offer such a good price. They usually make money with the less known domains as well as selling hosting, etc.
I would say the best thing to look for when searching for a registrar / reseller is ICANN accredidation (says that they're the real thing, and accountable). and a user friendly management interface.
Things like registrar locking and auto-renew are always helpful as well.
I'm currently working on a registration site of my own, but for now, I'd reccommend my competitors.. registerfly or godaddy.
