I like to keep everything out of the way, so I only need to think about what's in front of me. As such, I hide everything I reasonably can, and then Command-Tab and use Alfred to get around. (I almost never use the dock—for anything.)
Sometimes this desktop starts to feel boring, so I change the color or add a pattern—most times I get irritated by the visual noise and within moments and go back to flat grey.
