I have a friend who works at Valve, another at Ubisoft Montreal and one other at Red Storm.
The one from Valve got in through the mod scene, he was very active on it, worked on many mods. The one from Ubi he's a computer scientist and works on systems related to online games and stuff like that, it's his first job in the game industry. The one at Red Storm is an artist and worked previously on other game studios not sure how he started.
