Life-long drummer—jumped to electronic drums more than a decade ago. There are some slight draw-backs, which are more than compensated for in a ton of positives.

The fact is, price is the cost you pay for a drum set with a volume knob and plug-and-play recording. The luxury of being able to put on headphones and play through a system that sounds like you have a recording engineer working the board in the room with you is pretty great. Eliminating two days of fooling around with mic levels and plugging from the drums into the board is a mercy.

For volume reasons, I used to play an acoustic kit outfitted with pads, which got the job done. This is an okay option, not great, but better than not playing. The link below is way too pricey, but shows what I'm referring to.

If you decide you are more interesting in investing in electronic drums, perhaps you would be interested in the vdrums forums:

Lots of smart drummers and good information at that site (though, admittedly, I haven't frequented there in a while; it was my go-to place when I had questions about electronic drums).

If I can be of any help, post here and I'll answer as best as I can.
