    ^ I think if finally understand the concept of mining now. You leverage your computers CPU or GPU power to mine for gold. This processing power is what provides the backbone to every transaction in the bitcoin network. Much like a P2P music site where you ratio improves the more you upload... only in this case you get fractions of bitcoins for the amount of processor power you dedicate.
