If im understanding you correctly you plugged your self directly into the cable modem and got not net?
Well thats typical of cable modems, if they are plugged into the same thing for a while, like a day or so they get attached to it. The best thing to do is just unplug the power from the cable modem to reset it.
And like said before if you want to use your router and your webcam, just use the admin tools and set up port forwarding.
