  The slats underneath make a HUGE difference to a mattress' long-term health and quality.

  I made a mistake and put a shitty old Ikea 'Sultan' mattress (as posted by Akrok, above) straight onto the floor in an old place and *bumf!* ended up with black mould growing underneath.

  Not very nice, but at least it gave me a chance to hoy out a crappy mattress that'd already sunk in the middle after only a couple years use.
