It's wonderful that you were there with him when he went. The last two cats we've had to have put down, the vet let me hold them in my arms while he did what he did. While it obviously hurt tremendously, over time it made me feel really good and at peace that I had such an intimate connection them on the way out. The last one actually put her paw in my hand and kneaded my palm as I held her. She knew what was going on, but didn't struggle and seemed at peace.
Again, I'm so sorry man.
