Chicago's design community is very strong. The work largely tends to lean towards corporate clients or not-for profits. But there are also other studios putting out some great work for other types of clients. I would quickly add to Identity's list:

gripBut as Identity said, there are a lot of smaller shops/groups of people working together on more niche clients and products. The thing is with the community here you are generally 1 person removed from someone else, so it's important to not burn bridges or put people off.
As well, we have a very strong startup community. With that numerous other co-working spaces focused on startups are opening and bringing young companies here.
