Making progress... my coworker sent me this which I'm going to try out, if I can:
Office 2007 (PC)
1. In Illustrator, convert any fonts and strokes to outline shapes*
2. Use the Pathfinder feature to create compound shapes, if desired
3. Go to File > Export and save as a Windows Metafile (.wmf) or Windows Enhanced Metafile (.emf) format
4. Open PowerPoint and import the .wmf or .emf file
5. Ungroup the object; you may need to do it twice
6. Remove any unnecessary background shapes; often there is at least one
7. If you didn't create one compound shape (step #2), group together anything that needs to be white/background color
8. Group together anything that needs to be a color
