I have gotten work and real life networking opportunities from instagram. Think about it, it's no different than a blog. Some people post things like, 'this is me in my new car' or 'this is what I'm having for lunch'.
My stream consists of 98% of 'this is what I'm working on right now'
and because of that, I even got sponsorship from companies, giving me new controllers, software and hardware for free. Things I was thinking of buying for myself too...My suggestion for you freelancers out there is, use it as a marketing tool and you will see positive feedback from it.
I have another account for my clothing company which gives me access to so much networking is not even funny, I'm selling more gear due to instagram than with any other tool online.

Buying followers is pointless though, you want followers that care about what you have to say. Facebook pages is dead, instagram is where is at now.
